Does Milk Before Bed Help You Sleep Better?

You will probably remember your mom admonishing you to drink a glass of warm milk because ‘warm milk will help you sleep’….her daily lullaby before bedtime.

The idea has been around for a long time.

Well, is it a fact or myth embedded in popular bedtime stories? Does milk before bed really help you sleep better?

Well, as it turns out, yes. The reasons are compelling.

Sleep inducer

Tryptophan is an ingredient in milk, which boosts the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical acting on the brain to produce deep sleep. Tryptophan is a class of amino acids. Amino acids form the building blocks in our bodies. Chemistry overdose? Keep reading.

Contained in milk, calcium helps in creating rich conditions for sound sleep.

Nighttime drink

Oh, perfect! Now, along comes research suggesting that milk taken from cows at night – the technical term is night milk- might be the answer to better shut-eye. It has hyper dosages of tryptophan and melatonin. And hey, it’s different from standard milk.

Our Mom was always right

Well, it turns out that mom, from the first paragraph, did well!

Professional opinion advises that memories help. If you have childhood memories of caregivers cajoling a glassful before bed, you would be programmed, in adulthood, to sleep better after having milk. The association acts as a trigger to sleep gloriously.

Warm milk

It is as good an aid in sleep.  Warm milk laced with condiments reduces movement during sleep which makes you rest sounder.

Your brain winds down at the end of the day because doing something which de-stresses you, makes going to bed easier. So, it’s the right thing to do by taking a warm glass of milk. Binging on your horror or crime flicks is not recommended if you are wooing sleep.

Double bonanza

Leisure activity combined with the habit of having milk really helps in earning sleep. It’s the onset of sleep which is really the thing. Lesser the time taken to nod off means more sleep in proportion.

Some form of activity, leisure walking, reading, even light gardening has been known to catalyze sleep.

Quick Fixes

Now that you know why milk helps you sleep why don’t you book your passage to deep slumber land with these milk recipes?

Strawberry Milk

Tried strawberry milk? It makes children as well as adults sleep better.  Strawberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamin B6 and melatonin and combined with milk, set off relaxing sleep.

Ingredients – vanilla extract, honey, 8 ounces of milk (one you prefer), chopped strawberries and strawberry puree. Experiment taste as you go along.

Warm Turmeric Milk

Turmeric, our omnipresent haldi, enables the body to relax and curb sleep deprivation, lowering anxiety levels. So, blend with warm milk before sleeping.

Easy to make – 2 cups milk of your choice, ground turmeric, a light dose of cinnamon, peeled ginger, and a tablespoon of honey. Taste to go along mixing.
