Why Does the Mattress Size Matter?
Just imagine – you have got this amazing bed frame, you have done all that elaborate research on the mattress you want, and then you go ahead and order the wrong size. Not a good picture, right?
That is why SleepyCat is here to help you understand the importance of choosing the right mattress size.
Mattresses mostly come in 4 standard sizes: single, double, king and queen. You must measure the length and width of the bed frame in order to determine the mattress size you require. You start with measuring the internal dimensions of your bed frame, after all who would want an ill-fitted mattress hanging from the corners.
How to measure your mattress size –
Step 1 : – Measure the inner edges of your bed in inches (length & width)
Step 2 : – Choose the right mattress size matching with your bed measurement.

The Standard Mattress Sizes:
Are you thinking of moving into a cozy studio apartment or a spacious master bedroom? Understanding the differences between single, double, queen, and king-size mattresses will help you make the right choice. Let us understand why:
Single bed mattress (typically 36 inches x 72 inches) is great for kids, teenagers, and lowkey sleepers. It also works well for guest rooms or smaller bedrooms.
If you are a solo sleeper yet do that little dance around your bed at night, a double bed mattress (48 inches x 75 inches) is a great option. It offers more width than a single mattress but remains compact enough for smaller master bedrooms or guest rooms.
Is that new love flourishing? Or are you planning to pop the question? Of course, you’ll need more space then! A queen-size mattress (60 inches x 80 inches) is one of the most popular choices, especially for couples. It offers enough room for two people to sleep comfortably without taking up too much space in the bedroom. Perfect for cozy nights and lazy mornings together, a queen-size mattress strikes the right balance between comfort and practicality.
A king-size mattress (72 inches x 78 inches) is perfect for those who crave that extravagant comfort. It is the ultimate choice for the one with absolute main character energy. If you love to stretch out or share your bed with a furry friend who insists on its own space, a king-size mattress ensures there’s room for everyone. It is spacious enough to provide undisturbed sleep while adding a luxurious feel to your bedroom. Because when it comes to comfort, why settle for anything less than king-size?
Did you know? At SleepyCat, we are all about making sure you sleep just right! If our standard sizes do not fit your needs, no worries–we’ve got you covered with custom mattress sizes. Because you are unique, and we value that.
Factors That Determine the Size of a Mattress
The size of your mattress can make a significant difference in your comfort. You may not have thought about it this way before, but it’s our responsibility to guide you. After all, we want you to choose not only the right type of mattress but also the right size to ensure the best sleep experience.

1. Room Size and Aesthetics
The size of your bedroom is one of the most important factors when choosing a mattress size.
- Single and twin mattresses are ideal for smaller rooms or tight spaces, such as children’s bedrooms or guest rooms. If you are a bachelor and just moved into a new space, this is the perfect choice. You can simply own the room the way you wish.
- Double and queen-size mattresses work well in medium-sized rooms, providing enough space for comfort without overcrowding the room.
- King-size mattresses require larger bedrooms to avoid making the room feel cramped. Ideally, you should have at least 2 feet of walking space around the bed.
2. Number of Sleepers
The number of people using the mattress also affects the size choice:
- Single mattresses are perfect for solo sleepers or children.
- Double mattresses can accommodate two people, but they may feel a little cramped if the sleepers move throughout the night.
- Queen and king mattresses offer more space for couples and are ideal for those who love to sleep like a king or queen, taking their room and owning it.
3. Sleeping Habits and Position
Your sleeping position and movement during the night should influence your choice:
- If you tend to spread out while sleeping or toss and turn, a larger mattress like a queen or king will give you more comfort.
- Couples with different sleep habits may prefer a king size mattress to minimize disturbances from partner movement. SleepyCat has designed mattresses that negate motion transfer and also minimizes movement. After all, the comfort of our mattresses is unmatched and I guarantee that!
4. Height and Body Type
Your height and body type play a key factor: Know How:
- Taller individuals may feel cramped on a single or double mattress and should opt for a queen or king size.
- Are you over 6 feet tall? Well, a single-bed mattress is definitely not your ideal match –and I don’t need an oracle to tell you that!
- Individuals with a heavier build should always consider a queen or king-size mattress for better support and comfort.
5. Budget
Now comes an important factor, money! At SleepyCat, we believe a mattress is a one-time investment – so choose wisely. Because investing in the right mattress means investing in your sleep health.
6. Mattress Thickness and Bed Frame
The thickness and type of bed frame can affect the overall feel and fit of the mattress:
- Some bed frames may have specific size requirements, therefore, be careful in the size selection.
- Thicker mattresses may require deeper fitted sheets and a taller bed frame.

7. Future Needs
Buying a mattress means looking at a bigger picture, because we do not change mattresses every 6-7 months. So think very practically.
- If you plan to move to a bigger or smaller home, choosing a versatile mattress size like a queen (72*60 inches) might be more practical.
- For growing children or expanding families, investing in a larger mattress (king: 78*72 inches) may save you from upgrading too soon.
